Apsley House

Apsley House was built 1841 as St Mary’s School, a mixed educational facility. Though it no longer served as a school when Pink Fortress took over the property, we have been able to successfully preserve and restore many of the building’s original features. The property now hosts 7 apartments and was completed in 2020. It is the first Grade II listed building in Pink Fortress’s portfolio.

Externally, the stone work, doors and railing all required significant care and restorative work. The sleek black colour of the doors allow for a more cohesive look of the building from the roadside, and tie this historic property in with its surroundings.

Internally, the original entryway had been blocked off, so our team went about opening the space back up and returning the foyer to its original design. We were also able to restore the original vaulted ceilings which beautifully showcases the building’s personality.

We also utilised the unique opportunity posed by the two side doors, which had been closed off but originally would have been the boys' and girls' separate school entrances. Now restored, these provide private external entrances for the front two flats.

Not only were we able to restore this property to its former beauty, but by leaning into its character, and so leaning into its 'pink', unique and thoughtful additions could be made to both elevate the tenants’ experience and pay homage to its history.

The original charm, character and history of the building is embedded into our development design and execution, but they now boast new life, extending its future and reminding its occupants of its unique memories.
